Activity:The selected candidate will support the research team across core R&D activities of theForestSphere project. Specifically, the candidate will be involved in: Integration and configuration of hardware components, including sensors, computing units andcommunication modules, for data acquisition in forest environments. Development and testing of ROS-based sensor drivers and low-level interfaces (e.g., LiDAR, camerafeed acquisition, serial protocols, etc.) for reliable field data collection. Implementation and execution of mapping software testing procedures to ensure system stability andperformance across different modules. Participation in pilot trials, including setup, on-site support, data collection, and post-trial evaluation ofsystem performance. Assisting with iterative validation of the digital twin infrastructure, including feedback-driven adjustmentsbased on experimental results.
Academic level: Bachelors/BSc. in the areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Robotics,Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related area, enrolled in a master’s program or a non-degree course in Portugal.

Activity:The selected candidate will support the ForestSphere research team by leading R&D tasksrelated to the integration of semantic segmentation with metric-semantic mapping for Digital Twin applicationsin forestry. Specifically, the candidate will be responsible for: Development/optimization of real-time machine learning-based image segmentation pipelines for thedetection and classification of forest-relevant entities (e.g., trees, trails, vegetation classes) using RGBand/or depth sensor data; Projection and fusion of semantic labels onto spatially consistent 3D maps to build metric-semanticrepresentations of the environment; Extension and adaptation of an existing metric mapping frameworks (e.g., Voxblox, NanoMap, SSMI,DUFOMap, i-Octree, H2-Mapping, DSP-Map, Bonxai, VDB_GPDF, etc.) to support layered data (e.g.,RGB texture, semantic classes); Integration of semantic mapping with SLAM pipelines; Development of modular and reusable software components to ensure compatibility and integration withthe ForestSphere Digital Twin architecture; Participation in pilot deployments, including performance evaluation and system validation in real-worldforest environments; Contribution to the iterative refinement of semantic mapping tools based on experimental feedback andoperational requirements.

Activity:The selected postdoctoral researcher will provide advanced expertise and leadership inmultimodal sensor data fusion for 3D forest mapping using ground vehicles equipped with diverse sensingmodalities. The role focuses on developing and integrating robust mapping and digital twin solutions within theForestSphere project framework. Specifically, the candidate will be responsible for: Designing and implementing fusion pipelines for multimodal sensor data, including 3D LiDAR, RGB-Dcameras, multispectral and event-based cameras, RADAR, IMU, and GNSS-RTK, to generate accurateand comprehensive 3D maps of forest environments. Collaborating closely with project partners to integrate sensor-derived mapping data with GIS systems,ensuring seamless interoperability within the Digital Twin architecture. Leading the refinement and extension of the efficient mapping architecture developed at ISR-UC,including the enhancement of semantic mapping layers and the development of the modular,interoperable, large-scale and efficient mapping API. Mentoring, and providing technical guidance to junior researchers within the project, maintaining regularmeetings to support their progress and align their work with project goals. Actively participating in all project partner meetings, including technical and quality managementsessions, to coordinate research activities and ensure adherence to project milestones. Preparing and delivering high-quality project documentation, including technical deliverables andscientific publications, focusing on multimodal data fusion, mapping innovations, and Digital Twinapplications. Managing, planning, execution, and analysis of pilot deployments in real-world forest environments,coordinating performance evaluations and system validations to assess accuracy, robustness, andscalability of developed solutions.
Academic level: PhD holder in the areas of Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical and ComputerEngineering, Engineering Physics or a related area (see selection criteria). The doctoral degree must have been obtained within the last three years prior to the date of submission of theapplication (i.e., after June 15, 2022). The research work leading to the PhD degree must not have been conducted at the host institution of theresearch grant (i.e., ISR-UC).
