Urbano J. Nunes

Urbano J. Nunes received the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 1995. Prof. Nunes is a Full Professor with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Coimbra University, and a Senior researcher of the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-UC) where he is the coordinator of the Human-Centered Mobile Robotics lab. He has been involved with/responsible for several funded projects at both national and international levels in the areas of mobile robotics, intelligent vehicles and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). He has research interests in several areas in connection with intelligent vehicles and human-centered mobile robotics with more than 160 published papers in these areas. Dr. Nunes was Vice President for Technical Activities of the IEEE ITS Society (2011-2012), a member of the Board of Governors of ITS Society (2009-2011), and a Cochair of the Technical Committee on Autonomous Ground Vehicles and ITS (2006-2011) of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS). He serves as Associate Editor the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles (2015-) and was Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (2007-2016) and IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine (2009-2017). He was co-organizer of eight journal special issues and more than 12 Int. Workshops in topics related to Technologies for Intelligent Vehicles. He was with several international conferences: General co-chair of the 11th IEEE ICAR2003; Program Chair of IEEE ITSC2006; Program co-chair of IEEE ITSC2008; Program Chair of the IEEE ICVES2007; General Chair of the 13th IEEE ITSC2010; a General Chair for the IEEE/RSJ IROS 2012, and the General Chair of the IEEE ROMAN2017.
